Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has shown support for these policies
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell revealed that he will likely vote for the legislation that reflects the bipartisan framework on gun control. The framework was negotiated by Republican Texas Sen. John Cornyn and Democrat Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy.
“For myself, I’m comfortable with the framework and if the legislation ends up reflecting what the framework indicates, I’ll be supportive,” McConnell said.
McConnell marks the 11th Republican Senator to voice support for the framework, which would suggest a possible bill would have enough votes to overcome a filibuster.
McConnell’s support does not reflect support from the entire Republican party. Florida Republican Rep. Greg Steube has come out and aggressively attacked the framework, arguing legislation pushed by Democrats would ban weapons that he carries every day during a House Judiciary Committee meeting.
“Here’s a gun I carry every single day to protect myself, my family, my wife, and my home,” Steube said. “This is a XL Sig Sauer P365. It comes with a 15-round magazine. Here’s a seven-round magazine, which would be less than what would be lawful under this bill if this bill were to become law.”
“I hope that gun is not loaded,” Texas Democrat Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee responded.
“I’m at my house. I can do whatever I want with my guns,” Stuebe said in return.
These two staunchly different opinions reflect how divided the Republican party remains on gun control.
